We have been learning the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing. The traits are: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, Conventions, and Presentation. The traits are a way of teaching the language of writing, it isn’t a writing program.

Words Their Way

We’ve begun a new spelling program, called Words Their Way. Spelling, just like reading, is developmental. The research shows that students that have trouble spelling may also have trouble decoding words. Our Community and Beyond

The students blasted off from Earth in the space shuttle to discover where in the world our community is located. Once in space, the students had to find their way back to the community in which NASA placed the landing beacon by using visual discovery. The students analyzed satellite photographs to understand social studies vocabulary and concepts.

Dress for Success

Today was another Dress for Success day! The students looked very mature and professional! We’re finding that when the students are dressed for success in ties, dresses, skirts, and even suits, their behaviors mimic the outerwear. The students really took their jobs seriously and were very engaged in learning. They also enjoyed the attention that their mature looks garnered them. I hope more

Homework for Week of 10/29/07
 
Math: Addition, Subtraction, and Money
  1.  worksheet or textbook work
  2.  Math Log: Practice addition facts for 10 minutes per night and log it (either by flashcards, quizing, computer games, or pencil and paper)
  3. Parents/Guardians sign the log on Thursdays
 
Spelling: sh-, wh-, th-
  1.  both sounds that th can make (this and breath) oddball
  2.  word sort or worksheet
 
Reading: Read for 15 minutes per night and log it in the Reading Log
  1.  Parents/Guardians sign the log on Thursdays

October Monthly Project:
Realistic Fiction
  1.  Read a realistic fiction book, which is a book with real-life characters, problems/solutions, and setting
  2.  Choose to make either a new book jacket or a vest that describes the book
